World Population Day : An Insight on Oral Health and Dental Awareness

 

Dental and Oral Health are alarming issues around the world especially in IndiaWorld Population Day is seen on 11th July every year. Root And Tooth Dental care was established by Dr. Naresh khandelwal. Motivation for Dr. Naresh Khandelwal behind establishment of our Dental Care Center was to spread dental awareness and cure oral diseases. Therefore, today on World Population Day, team at Root And Tooth Dental Care have taken a step to educate masses about oral  health and its importance.
According to a latest research world population estimates to 7.6 Billion (2018). This current world population is 7.6 billion as of July 2018 according to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometers. However, this increasing population is a growing concern for the world and so is health care of such a varied group of people. Not many people know that general health of an individual depends majorly on oral health. Improper oral health may lead to major health issues related to heart, mouth and server headaches. According to a research over 1/3 of the world population suffers from untreated tooth decay in form of cavity , oral infections, abscesses , tooth pain and other mouth diseases.

A survey conducted on a group of people for a month revealed a questionable result. It suggested a major concern for society that needs to be sort out so as to make people more orally healthy.

Result of Dental Awareness survey :

  • About 69.20% of the participants used a toothbrush with toothpaste as a method of cleaning their teeth.
  • 35.71% brushed twice in a day.
  • 33.03% brushed both in the morning and at bedtime.
  • About 8.93% of the participants used mouthwash.
  • Unfortunately only 40.62% of people visited the dentist during the last six months. Furthermore among them 61.18% attended because of pain or toothache.
  • However, three-fourth of the participants knew that tooth decay and bad breath were the effects of not cleaning the teeth.
  • It was known to 71.42, 63.39, 70.53, and 73.21% of the respondents, respectively, that excess sweet, cold drink, alcohol, and smoking/pan chewing were bad for dental health.
  • Television was the source of knowledge to 57.14% of the participants and 35.71% acquired their knowledge from a dentist.

Females, literates, urban residents, users of mouthwash, and regular visitors to the dentist had good oral hygiene practices. Thus awareness among study people was very less and poor and asks for an action. Therefore educating masses is very important.

Oral Disease : An Alarming Situation

Oral Diseases are a major public health concern. Improper Oral health effect not only general health of an individual but suppresses overall quality of Life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Promotion of oral health is a cost-effective strategy to reduce the burden of oral disease and maintain oral health and quality of life. Dental diseases affect people worldwide as well as in the Indian community. Some of the most common among them are Periodontal diseases, dental caries, malocclusion, and oral cancer. These disease prevail among the society and people still are not aware about them. In India dental caries prevails among children with a high percentage of 60-80% . Therefore it is a major public health problem in India. Probably due to genetic predisposition, developmental problems, poor oral hygiene, and traumatic incidents oral diseases in  India have a high risk. Oral cancer is another major issue faced in Indian Society.

A large ratio of these diseases can be prevented at individual and community levels. this may be done by providing oral health-related education for improving the oral health attitude and practices among the general population. Therefore at Root and Tooth Dental Care various free dental and Oral health check up camps with name Project Miles Of Smiles are conducted in various parts of Jaipur and nearby. Our aim is to create an educated and Orally healthier society by spreading dental awareness.
